Are you thinking about taking the next promotion exam or are you on a current promotion list?

Are you struggling in your current supervisor role and are afraid you are going to look incompetent?

Maybe you are a good supervisor now but want to take your leadership to the next level?

You’re struggling and you’re afraid you’ll look incompetent

You’re having doubts.  You’re struggling with what your new role really means? You know you’re supposed to lead from the front, motivate and inspire.

But at the same time, you are also responsible for inspections, scheduling, timesheets, and annual performance reviews.  Oh yea, don’t forget, you are also expected to hold people accountable.

You want to be that respected leader others look up to and want to follow.

All leaders have all been in that place you are right now.  They’ve had those same doubts, struggled with their role, and made mistakes.

What separates the good, or even average leaders from the great ones is conscious competence. You must make a choice.  Are you going to keep struggling, trying to figure it out on your own and hope you get better?

Or will you make a decision, today, right now, to become a better leader? Great leaders take action.  Great leaders figure out what they need to learn and where they need to grow.  Great leaders seek out teachers, mentors, and coaches to help them achieve their full potential.

Are you ready to take action? Are you ready to become a competent and respected leader others will want to follow?

If you answered yes, read on.

While all leaders are born, great leaders are made.

As a profession we do a good job training new recruits.  Think back to your time as a rookie.  You received hundreds of training hours in the police academy.  You were given tools to put on your belt to assist you in doing your job and completing your mission, to protect and serve.

Here is the problem. When you get promoted, you need a whole new set of skills and new tools to succeed. But what, typically, happens when you get promoted?  You hear, “Congratulations. Good luck in your new assignment.”  That’s it? Good luck? No training, no mentoring, no coaching, and no new set of tools to help you succeed.

The law enforcement promotion assessment center is just the beginning. The results of your promotion process just tell you that you have what it takes to be a supervisor.  Think about it like the application stage for your agency.  We don’t hire people and give them a badge and gun right away and then say, Good luck.  No go out there and arrest the bad guys. No, we put them through a law enforcement academy.  We give them the skills, tools, and the training they need in order to be successful.

When you get promoted, it is the same thing.  You need new skills, new tools, and new training to be successful as a leader.

What? Your agency does not provide you with enough (or any) leadership training? While that is not your fault, it is also not an excuse.  You are responsible for your own development.

I can help you.
